A Most Unwelcome Visitor Arrives, To the Consternation of Many
A cold sterile backdrop, and in the fore two Figures hunch over a table. The walls around them stretch to the shadows, while beyond them a Troupe of musicians toils Madly at their instruments.
A naked electric bulb descending from the darkness above casts all in a harsh relief. The angles of the room are sharp; despite the frantic ministrations of the Artist, the sounds are swallowed up by the Vastness.
The Older of the figures turns to the other to speak. The Speaker's eyes are blank. He seems to hear not the strains of Music around him. The other figure remains quiet, his head bowed. It appears that the Actions of the troupe are in Vain.
'Everywhere is this Emptiness...It is all around us...It has driven us from our Beginnings. It was not always like This.'
The Elder continues his monologue while the Electric light plays over his face. His eyes look towards a past that is Fading farther away with each passing Day. The younger figure remains Unmoved as the Elder bemoans the plight of Music.
There was a time when the Music was Pure, continues the Old One. The sound was important and there was a Feeling throughout that was tangible and real. How was this Lost, when surely this was the Essence? Surely this was the Everything?
As the Old One talks, the other figure's Gaze is suddenly caught by a new Arrival. He turns away from his Companion, transfixed. His face is marked by a mixture of Hope and Admiration.
